Welcome to 2025: Here come 'Rat cakes,' the Fisherman look, mountain sojourns and 'Castlecore'
It’s a new year and what better time to embrace a new perspective on old habits than now.
Why not try something different, unconventional, even bold and wacky when it comes to what we eat, wear, how we live and places we visit in 2025?
The year has only just begun, but new lifestyle trends expected to permeate our everyday lives are already underway, according to Pinterest, the popular “life inspo” platform that Gen Z swears by.
Pinterest attracts more than half a billion people to its platform monthly to search and shop for the “next big trend.” By analyzing year-over-year growth in search terms used by its massive audience, Pinterest is able to extrapolate unique — and pretty accurate — insights into soon-to-be-trending behaviors that are likely to go mainstream, still mostly among Gen Z and its younger cohort, Gen Alpha (get this: the oldest Gen Alpha turns 15 this year).
So what should we expect in 2025? Buckle up.
Rat cake, or “chaos” cake? Take your pick: Pinterest said searches for “rat cake” have jumped 170% year-over-year. It’s kinda gross but the current cake vibe is all about funny cakes, silly cakes, the crazier the better. Just, nothing cute because sweet chaos in confections is in.
Mountains are in. Cities are out: While Gen Z is ready to embrace chaos in their desserts, they’re not willing to apply that sentiment to their vacation planning. According to Pinterest, the hustle and bustle of city destinations is out in 2025 and out-of-the-way mountain ranges will become the go-to travel choice as both Gen Z and Gen Xers crave nature walks, fresh air and unobstructed views for miles.
“Fisherman Aesthetic” or “Edgy Boho”: Oh great, more chaos. Forget about fancy bows and leopard prints. We’re ushering in nautical stripes, chunky leather jackets and boots, and “Castlecore.”
2025 is gearing up to be the year of many looks — the laid-back maritime “fisherman aesthetic” with stripe tops, cable-knit sweaters and sardine tattoos (yep!). Also in is the edgier Boho vibe with leather jackets and handbags, chunky leather boots paired with lace dresses.
Thrown into the fashion mix is Castlecore. Pinterest searches have surged for this look, defined by gothic-inspired accessories and clothing, such as chainmail necklaces, Medieval aesthetic dresses and footwear, even Medieval-inspired home décor.
More is more at home: Speaking of home, more is definitely more in 2025. Demure is out. This means big, bold print, color, a mismatch of designs and textures to the max. Pinterest said we should expect this “maximalist” trend to seep into fashion, too.
Searches on Pinterest for “vintage maximalism” surged 260% year-over-year and are up 215% for “eclectic maximalism.”
Your “aura” will inspire your makeup: Beauty trends in 2025 aren’t about hiding or camouflaging. They’re about boldly and unabashedly declaring what “mood” we’re wearing. Pinterest said “aura” beauty is our mood expressed through one color or blending several colors over the face and on our nails.
Pickles are sticking around in 2025: The pickle craze has been going strong for some time already and it’s not about to diminish anytime soon. Searches for “pickle margarita,” “pickle cake,” “fried pickle dip” are going strong on Pinterest. So yes, everyone is still all-in on pickles in the new year.
